we are interesting about american lifestyle and we have lots of questions about:
- what is the american dream for you?
- Is the life of the students the same as it's showed us in the films?- Is normally the cheer-leader the girlfriend of the football captain?- and was the intelligent girl converted in the girlfriend of the hotest and lout boy?- have they to pass a sort of test to be a cheer-leader?- is true that they live in a huge house and they have a numerous family and also pets?- is true that all the girl with 15y.o. are operated? (breast, nose, cheest, teeth...)- is true that there are only one boy in the high school who has spots?- is true that they start singing in the most inverosimilar places?

In some high schools it is common for the cheerleaders to date football players. Sometimes it even happens like in the movies, but usually I think they like each other because they see each other so much. I don't know if there is a test to become a cheerleader, but you do have to try out. You would have to show that you can do back handsprings, the splits, etc.
There are multiple boys and girls with spots, although it is not desirable. In most schools, there are smart students who are also popular, but sometimes if a student is too "nerdy", they are known for their grades not for their popularity.
I hope this helps!
Hola, me llamo Kyle, y estoy en me segundo año en MIT.
I like your question about the “American dream,” and I’m impressed that you’ve heard of that phrase. To me, the American dream means being successful in life. I want to graduate from college, get a job, make a decent amount of money, own a home in the suburbs, marry, and have a family. To others, the American dream might mean something different, but I think that is the general idea.
Do you guys have similar desires?
I hear the American dream referred to more with reference to people wanting to do better than their current economic state. It is this constant need to improve that makes the US so innovative, but at the same time it makes Americans work too much sometimes too. So, I guess the traditional definition of the American dream was to do better than your parents and be able to provide for yourself and a family. In this way, the family steadily improves and becomes better off as the generations progress. This was very important for immigrants like my grandfather and others of his era and still is for immigrants today, primarily from Mexico. It is a ideal that keeps people hoping that they can overcome poverty and have a better life for posterity (their kids). However, I would say that my “American dream” is not the same as this old definition for established Americans, such as myself and my MIT colleagues. The American dream for me is to pursue my own ambitions and work hard enough to get a job of my choosing that I love to do. I want to work on designing and inventing new medical tools. It’s going to take a lot of schooling, even past MIT, but that’s the path that I’m seeking in life and is my American dream.
Very interesting question! Is there something similar to this in Spain? What is the general goal of immigrants in recent history (the last 3 centuries)? Do they have a Spanish dream that drives them to do better?
Best,
Greg
Great you all answer our questions.Apart from the first question (what´s the american dream) we were jocking. I mean, the other questions were prank questions, but thanks for answer them.
I must say kyle, that I have the similar desires you have: to graduate from college, get a job, make a decent amount of money, own a home, marry, and ahave a family, and a dog if it would be possible jajaja.
About your question Greg, I really don´t know, people in spain have different desires. Have money and relax are the most common dreams in this country. People, specially new generations don´t like very much to work, but they love make money although usially it´s money give them from their parents.
Being a bit generalist, we could say the spanish dream in relationship with work is to work for the state, to be a funcionario.
And about what´s the spanish dream for people who come here from other countries i don´t know. Propbably from the ones who come from countries like Marruecos or other countries in Africa, the dream is to get a work better than the one they have on their original country.
Best wishes.
Alejandro.
Jaja me gustan sus preguntas!
The american dream means that even if your father is a janitor you can grow up to be a doctor if you try. I think its a very good that this is possible in the United States. I am from Haiti, where life is the completely opposite of the american dream. If you are born poor, you will most likely stay in the same class your whole life and if you are born rich you have all the privileges. In the United States, people who are born rich definitely have more opportunities but it is not impossible to change your fortune.
Regarding the movies, things are different depending on your location. Definitely not all 15 year old girls get cosmetic surgery but there was definitely at least one girl at my high school who did. At some schools it could be much more or none.
A lot of people have at least one pet and some have many more. It is not uncommon for families (at least where I live) to have multiple cats, dogs, hamsters, birds all at once. Although, most families have just one pet.
If by a test for the cheerleaders you mean hazing, at a lot of schools hazing is strictly prohibited and the students at my high school were very respectful of that rule. Besides, they don't really want to hurt their peers.

For me the American dream is to be free to lead any life. This not only means that it is legal but that America fosters this type of environment. It does so by having great public and private educations, tons of job offerings, government aid, ect.
Haha, good questions. I think the cheerleader-football captain pair is still somewhat relevant in most state schools. But it is less evident at MIT. This may be due to the fact that our football team is not very good. As far as intelligent girls, I believe couples are usually comparable in brains and looks. They seem to find someone similar in beauty and smarts.
Cheerleaders do have tryouts. In high-school a girls just had to be good at cheerleading. But in colleges with good teams, there is usually a requirement for beauty. I don't think there is a very strong correlation between cheer-leaders and money. Very few 15 year olds are operated but there are definitely cases.

hi! i live in africa (algeria), life here is a littel bit boring. i'm good at school, im a sportman(play tennis, rugby,...)i want to continue my studies in america, but i don't know i'm afraid to not integrate "rhe american society" i just want to know if people there accepte easily foreigner. thanks
Americans are pretty good about accepting international students like yourself. College campuses are the most accepting, and you would have nothing to worry about. I am a student at MIT and there are many international students here.
If you have any other questions, just post.
Best,
Greg
